Railroad Police and Regulations

Under RCW 81.60.010, the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission commissions railroad police officers at the request of any railroad corporation.  WSCJTC may revoke any railroad police officer commission at its pleasure.

Every railroad police officer commissioned under the provisions of RCW 81.60.010 through 81.60.060 has the same power and authority conferred by law on peace officers but may only exercise such power in the protection of the property belonging to or under the control of the corporation that requested the officer’s commission.

For more information regarding these regulations, please review Chapter 81.60 RCW.

Requirements

Before receiving a commission, each railroad police officer must: 1) successfully complete training; and 2) swear an oath to support the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution and laws of the state of Washington, and to faithfully perform their duties.  The approved training to meet this requirement consists of the Basic Law Enforcement Academy or the Basic Law Enforcement Equivalency Academy, depending on the officer’s prior training and experience.

The corporation requesting the officer’s commission shall bear the full cost of training.

Railroad police officers commissioned under RCW 81.60.010 through 81.60.060 are subject to rules and regulations adopted by the commission.
