WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Work throughout Washington State independently with minimal supervision to provide a full range of law enforcement and public safety services to the motoring public and visitors of Washington State. Troopers identify and enforce criminal and traffic law violations and support criminal prosecutions through the use of statutory arrest authority, search, investigation, and court proceedings. Troopers expedite safe traffic flow, assist with collision response and investigations, and aid motorists, crime victims, the public, and governmental bodies. Troopers can serve on committees or help with projects dedicated to public safety, education, crime prevention, and community initiatives. Troopers patrol almost 18,000 miles of roadway and are the most visible part of the agency. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Successful completion of Basic Law Enforcement Academy and probationary period. No sustained misconduct violations for excessive use of force, firearms usage, or discriminatory policing (bias). No sustained misconduct violations within the past three years. No suspensions, revocations, or discipline affecting peace officer certification. No felony convictions. No misdemeanor convictions involving DUI, use or possession of firearms in the commission of a crime, crimes of violence (i.e., domestic violence, assault, sex crimes, etc.), or controlled substances. Applicant must possess a current, non-probationary, and non-restricted valid driver’s license. History of restrictions on license or driving record due to vehicle operation or control as reported on the Abstract of Driving Record will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Upon hire, must possess a Washington State driver’s license and maintain such licensure during employment with the WSP. HIRING PROCESS The WSP has five phases to our hiring process. Phase 1: Application Review Phase 2: Background Investigation Phase 3: Command Interview Phase 4: Psychological test, Psychological Interview w/ Psychologist, Medical exam Phase 5: Polygraph There is no written or physical test for lateral hires. TRAINING PROGRAM Lateral transfers will complete a paid five-week non-militaristic, classroom, and hands-on learning WSP trooper equivalency course followed by a four-week field training course with a senior WSP commissioned officer. Out-of-state peace officers must complete an additional two-week Washington state equivalency course provided by the WSP to obtain a Washington state peace officer certification. During the training, lateral hires will have the option to travel home at the end of each day or stay at the academy with no cost to them.
