The 40-hour CJTC Handgun Instructor Course is designed to teach law enforcement and corrections personnel the skills required to lead safe and effective handgun training at the agency level. Participants should be proficient public speakers with above average marksmanship and weapons manipulation skills. This course is a blend of classroom and range to give the participant information related to the semi-automatic handgun platform and instructing the same, while also giving them practical range time to further develop their skill in operation and teaching the semi-automatic handgun.
All students must pass the Handgun Instructor Entry Test with a score of 90% or better on day one of the course. Failure will result in the student being released from the course. Pre-qualifications are unauthorized. Fees will not be waived.
Advanced Firearms Handgun Instructor
WHO CAN ATTEND OUR CLASSES?
- Applicants must be law enforcement officers or corrections officers actively engaged in, or expected to be detailed as a firearms instructors.
- Must possess above average marksmanship and weapon manipulation skills.
- Must be in good physical condition without no restrictions related to firearms training.
PREREQUISITE
A passing score of 90% on the entrance qualification is required. The entrance qualification will be conducted on the morning of day one of the course. To review the requirements, see our Entry Level Test form.
Failure of the entry qualification will result in the student being released from the course. Fees will not be waived.
DRESS CODE
Students should wear range appropriate clothing and come prepared for all weather conditions. Agency Identification required.
REGULATION
After successful completion, students will receive a CJTC Handgun Instructor certification valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
CANCELATION

Effective immediately:
Registration will be completed 45 days before the course start date. Invoices for the course will be generated and sent to respective agencies on the first day of the course. Payment for the course is expected within 30 days of receiving the invoice. Cancellations of registered attendees must occur before the registration date for the course. The cancellation must be submitted by the agency's training coordinator to the program registrar via email.- If cancellation occurs within 45 days of the course start date, the agency will be invoiced for the full tuition cost and are expected to pay the full price of tuition within 30 days of receiving the invoice.
- The WSCJTC encourages replacing the attendee who had to cancel with another attendee from the same agency. In certain circumstances, a credit can be extended to the agency for another course date.
- If cancellation occurs within 45 days of the course start date, the agency will be invoiced for the full tuition cost and are expected to pay the full price of tuition within 30 days of receiving the invoice.
Required Equipment
Duty handgun and Patrol duty belt with a minimum of 3 magazines. All applicants should consider bringing a duplicate spare duty pistol.
- Inert training pistol to fit your duty holster (red or blue gun) recommended.
- Two duty flashlights, or one duty flashlight and one backup
- Eye protection (including clear glasses for night firing)
- Hearing protection – electronic headphones and earplugs
- Review and be ready to discuss your agency’s firearms policies (will be comparing agencies policy to current law)

- Body armor
- Baseball hat recommended
- Laptop recommended
Required ammunition (responsibility of applicant's agency):
- 1,500 rounds primary handgun (clean fire required in Burien)
