Understanding the Diversity and Complexity of Asians and Asian American Communities

This self-paced course will provide an overview of the diversity and complexity of the Asian and Asian American communities in Washington and the United States. The course will examine the various social, cultural, and historical factors shaping the interaction between law enforcement and members of the Asian and Asian American communities. Cultural humility skills are emphasized throughout as they are essential when developing a deeper understanding of the complex identities of Asians and Asian Americans.

WHO CAN ATTEND OUR CLASSES?

Anyone with an Acadis or FirstForward login.

Per WAC 139-11, this course is required for:

  • all peace officers certified in Washington before December 7, 2019; and
  • lateral peace officers certified in Washington after December 7, 2019.

The course must be completed by January 1, 2028, for these two types of certified officers.

Additionally, if a certified peace officer graduates from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy after May 2020, the course is required and must be completed within three years from their graduation date.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

To attend this course, students must have a computer with audio and video capabilities, and an internet connection. Content, websites, videos, and other course materials are embedded into the course.
