Juvenile Corrections Officers Academy

Per WAC 139-10-240, the Juvenile Corrections Officers Academy (JCOA) is an 80 hour academy designed to train corrections personnel responsible for the care, custody, and safety of juvenile offenders in county facilities. Course topics may include, but not be limited to:

  • Observation skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Security management
  • Supervision of youth
  • Proper use of physical force
  • Legal issues
  • Report Writing
  • Dealing with aggressive behavior
  • Handling mental illness problems
  • Professionalism
  • Human relations/cultural awareness

WHO CAN ATTEND OUR CLASSES?

All correctional personnel employed by a recognized Washington State county detention facility whose primary job function is the care, custody, and safety of juvenile offenders

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

A detailed list of academy equipment required will be distributed to participants after their passing of the Physical Ability Test (PAT). This list will also be emailed to training officers listed on the participant's JCOA application.

It is the agency's responsibility to provide their participant with the equipment needed.

DRESS CODE

A detailed list of uniform requirements for the duration of the academy will be distributed to participants after their passing of the Physical Ability Test (PAT). This list will also be emailed to training officers listed on the participant's JCOA application.

It is the agency's responsibility to provide their participants with the uniforms needed.

REGULATION

The JCOA must be completed by all employees whose primary job function is the care, custody, and safety of juvenile offenders in county facilities per WAC 139-10-240.

 

SCHEDULE

JCOA classes are typically held 0700 to 1730 Monday through Thursday.

The number of JCOA classes held per year will vary each year depending on legislative decisions and funding. The schedules below outline all classes approved for the specified fiscal year.

Please note: These schedules are subject to change without notice. Training Officers must read selection notices carefully to ensure they have the correct dates.

CANCELLATION

Agency's wishing to cancel an applicant must notify the registrar via phone or email.

To register an applicant for this Academy, the following attachments must be included:

  • CJ-1251 Statement of Fitness
  • CJ-1253 Student Liability Release

Effective May 1st, 2021:

Submitting an incomplete registration request through the Acadis Portal is allowed. However, the request will not be processed until it is completed- it will remain in the queue (Application List) until all prerequisites are attached. Doing this only guarantees a spot in the queue, incomplete requests will not secure a spot in any specific class. Complete registrations are processed into open seats daily on a first-come/first-served basis. Therefore, it is best to submit only complete registration requests, confirming all aspects of the prerequisites are completed, to secure a seat in a class.

 

 

DOCUMENTS

Course information will be emailed to training officers on selection day for each academy. Training officers are responsible for ensuring their applicants receive the information.
