Juvenile Corrections Officers Academy

Per WAC 139-10-240, the Juvenile Corrections Officers Academy (JCOA) is an 80 hour academy designed to train corrections personnel responsible for the care, custody, and safety of juvenile offenders in county facilities. Course topics may include, but not be limited to:

  • Observation skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Security management
  • Supervision of youth
  • Proper use of physical force
  • Legal issues
  • Report Writing
  • Dealing with aggressive behavior
  • Handling mental illness problems
  • Professionalism
  • Human relations/cultural awareness

All JCOA attendees must be sponsored by a recognized Washington State Corrections Agency. Registration requests may only be submitted by agency-authorized personnel via the WSCJTC Acadis Portal. WHO CAN ATTEND OUR CLASSES?

This academy is open to recruits who have been hired by a recognized Washington State detention facility whose primary job function is the care, custody, and safety of juvenile offenders.

REGULATION

All employees whose primary job function is the care, custody, and safety of juvenile offenders in county facilities must attend a JCOA session within six months of their hire date, per WAC 139-10-210 and WAC 139-10-240.

To request an extension or exemption of the WAC requirements for their recruits, agency personnel can submit a waiver request here.

PREREQUISITE

In order to attend JCOA, recruits must pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT), which is typically administered by the recruit’s employing agency two weeks prior to the start of class.

SCHEDULE

JCOA classes are typically held 0700 to 1730 Monday through Thursday.

The number of JCOA classes held each year will vary based on legislative decisions and funding.

Please note: The Training Session dates listed below, as well as the attached schedules, are subject to change without notice. Training managers and recruits must read selection notices carefully to ensure they have the correct dates.

CANCELLATION

Agencies wishing to cancel an applicant’s registration must notify the registrar via phone or email.

REQUIRED FORMS

To register an applicant for this Academy, agency-authorized personnel can submit a request via the WSCJTC Acadis Portal. The following attachments must be included:

Submitting an incomplete registration request in the Acadis Portal is allowed, but it will not be processed until it is complete. Incomplete registration requests will remain in the queue (Application List) until all prerequisites are attached. Submitting an incomplete registration request only guarantees a spot in the queue, not in any specific class. Once registration requests are complete, they are processed into open seats on a first-registered/first-served basis.

DOCUMENTS

Course information will be emailed to training officers on selection day for each academy. Training officers are responsible for ensuring their applicants receive the information.
